Remaking the New Vegas Strip and Casinos in Fallout 4

Today ill be going into detail about some of the process and challenges of remaking the New Vegas Strip in Fallout 4. Ill preface this by saying what my role was in making the strip. I was responsible for 99% of the brand new assets created for the Strip and Project Mojave as a whole, this included things like all the various outfits the gamblers and families wear, aswell as all the new architecture and props to boot, all in all I think I made around 500 or so brand new assets ranging from, furniture to kit pieces to outfits to even the securitrons roaming the Strip.

Another important task was working closely with our lead level designer C411um13 to ensure consistency and to make sure we faithful upgrade and remake the Strip.

Project Mojave trailer which shows a lot of what I'm gonna talk about in action.

Ill start off with the main star of the show here the Strip itself, for us from the get go we made sure that we where to remake the strip as faithful and accurate to Obsidians original vision and concept so very little was made as additions except...

Things like clutter and details one such very apparent extra is the palm trees this was C411um13's idea and we all agreed it looked good.

When making the Strip it require a LOT of custom assets and architecture, so I remade pretty much all the new set pieces for the Strip from the outfits and Securitrons down to the architecture and foliage.

One issue challenged we faced was making sure everything was animated and felt polished and authentic and with using all BGS official tools we where able pull off such a task. - no unofficial tools here as usual!

For me when remaking the buildings I focused on one section at a time so First I made the Lucky 38 and all other assets to go along with it , after this I moved to work Gomorrah's exterior.

After Gomorrah I made The Ultra Luxe which was a pretty fun one to make since its so fancy looking.

Next was the Tops, which I did get a hand with since C4 kitbashed the hotel and to great effect. The sign on this one was also my favourite!

Then came Michael Angelos which was mostly a case of reusing the industrial kit I remade for CW (FO3 Remake) and making a new sign.. and Vault 21 was mostly kitbashed since its a pretty small building and was easily kitbashable. The sign is custom made.

Before we move onto the interiors I would also like to note that I remade all the gambler, settler and NCR outfits aswell as the three families outfits, since these are also key to the atmosphere of the Strip.

Now we move onto interiors, the Tops by far is the one I'm most proud of since I love the rat pack era deco. (I listened to a lot of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin while making this.)

So for the Tops I started it by basically remaking the whole cell as close to the original and lighting it and setting the palette mood and tone to the interior, then passed it to C4 to finalise and add details and clutter.

This cell like all of them contains so many new kit pieces, furniture and decorations all made by me, and the lighting was extremely fun also

We made every last thing even down to the casino tables which where made by me. I had to work closely with HcGxGrill on making the assets so they actually function ingame (check out his post on this for more about that)

The Aces was a very cool one to make and light, we took advantage if the NV Godrays in Fallout 4 to give the room a smoky atmosphere and make the performances come to life.

Now we move to Gomorrah perhaps the most sleezy casino and this was important for us to nail, so very careful attention was paid to the colour palette and lighting in this cell, once again I made the initial cell as close to the original as possible...

We really went all in on the warm dark tones in here to really give it that visual identity, lighting and colour palettes played a huge role in this

The courtyard was a very fun one to work on, so for this the vast majority of it is all custom assets so this was a real challenge. I was responsible for making all of them aswell as the actual level recreation and tone.

Just a cool view from the balcony :)

Next up is the Ultra Luxe this one was very difficult to make since its so pristine and has wildly contrasting tones and feels in different parts of the casino. the whole of this casino is custom assets made by me aswell as all the lighting and tone.

I started this whole cell with the huge floral bar in the center and the dome, this was key to get the a idea of the overall tone we wanted to recreate here, aswell as for the skylight on the ceiling to light up the area to look bright.

Then we contrasted over to back end of the casino all in the same cell to a more darker warmer feel of interior and getting these two moods to transition well was a huge challenge but the results where worth it

Next we have some of the other rooms like the bathhouse which is a brand new remade kit which is cut up into 6 sections, I made most of the cell got the lighting down aswell as adding effects like caustic lights, then I passed it onto MrColonelMustard.

Next was the Gourmand which i made first since most asset made for this was also used in the other rooms which I wont show since they are pretty similar.

This was just a some what detailed look at how we made this, the strip was being worked on throughout the whole 4 months we where developing Project Mojave and was the biggest challenge but the most rewarding part of the project.
